Every Rotarian Every Year - $100 each to our Rotary Foundation
There
is no particular theme for the month of May so let's promote Rotary by
wearing our pins, talking to our friends and colleagues and inviting
guests to our meetings.
Club Provides Funds For Secure Storage
President
Keith presented a cheque for $3400 to Rick Grinham of the Coal Hills
BMX Society to cover the cost of a steel storage container that the
society can use to store their equipment on site.
2007-2008 Community Project Complete!
President
Keith and Mayor Fred Bates of the Village of Cumberland officially
opened the two transit shelters provided to the community by our
club. Using $17,500 of the funds we raised at our Extravaganza
Italiana in October 2007, we were able to install the first two transit
shelters in Cumberland, to the delight of its residents.
DG Norm Watts Inducts Newest Cumberland Rotarian
Cumberland
Rotarians welcomed their newest member, Brad McKinnon to their midst on
Tuesday, 25 March. District 5020 Governor Norm Watts conducted
the ceremony that officially recognized Brad as a
Rotarian. Welcome, Brad.
Newest Rotarian Welcomed
Alan dejersey introduced
our newest Rotarian, Courtnay Jackson, a Realtor, to our club on 26
February. President Keith presided over the Induction
ceremony. Welcome Courtnay!
Cumberland Elementary Presented With $3600
Following our meeting on 19 February,
Stefan presented a cheque for $3600 to Cumberland Elementary School
Principal Kathy Gordon to cover the cost of materials for the school's
reading program.
District 5020's Mr Rotaplast, Bent Harder Received Support
Demonstrating the kind of smile that his dedication to
Rotaplast brings to Rotaplast patients, Bent Harder accepted a cheque
for $700 from Stefan Pletscher, WCS Director, and another for $700 from
President Keith Tatton. The mission Bent was supposed to
participate in was to be in Bolivia but political strife has led to its
cancellation. Brazil is a possible alternatitive. More to
follow.
President-Elect Linda Presnted $1000 to Billy Strachan
Josh Prowse, Katimavik Project Leader joined PE Linda as she presented a cheque for $1000 to A Day for Africa
project leader, Billy Strachan at our meeting on 4 March. The
funds are destined for the Stephen Lewis Foundation to help people with
AIDs and HIV in Africa. Katimavik volunteers worked hard on the
first Day for Africa on 1 March to help clean up our heritage orchard, concentrating on the removal of broom.
Our Club Will Sponsor Julie Horwood as a Peace Scholar
Alan deJersey introduced
Julie Horwood, a Registered Nurse, as our candidate for a Peace and
Conflict Resolution scholar. Julie spends much of her time
advising First Nations communities on home care and other
health-related issues. She is passionate about attending
university in Australia as part of the Rotary program to receive
further education and to work with communites in conflict in the
world. The scholarship is valued at $60,000 and is funded by the
Rotary Foundation.
